WIESBADEN, Germany - Drivers on Wiesbaden Army Airfield are finding some rerouting and changed parking options with the construction of a new traffic circle near Wiesbaden Arts and Crafts, just inside the South Gate, on Wiesbaden Army Airfield.

Last week saw the start of the first phase — relocating the perimeter fence to accommodate the construction.

The new circle, at the intersection of King Avenue and Aumann Strasse, will connect Wiesbaden Army Airfield South Housing with the airfield when it is completed in early May, according to Roger Gerber, director of the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Transformation Stationing Management Office. Housing construction is expected to wrap up around the end of May, he added.

Drivers should continue to use caution when approaching the construction area near the South Gate.

Drop-off parking for the Child Development Center has been temporarily relocated across the street to the Arts and Crafts Center parking area, Gerber said. It has been designated for half-hour customer parking. Arts and Crafts Center patrons who wish to park longer than 30 minutes are asked to be patient during this phase and to seek longer term parking in other areas on the installation.

The opening of a new parking garage next to the Wiesbaden Dining Facility, expected to occur in early February, should greatly relieve parking challenges on Wiesbaden Army Airfield.

“All motorists are encouraged to use this new facility which offers 1,100 parking spaces and should provide ample parking for all vehicles on WAAF,” said Gerber.

With designated surface parking for vans and larger vehicles, spaces on the ground level of the garage for handicapped parking and front row parking designated for eco-friendly vehicles, drivers have many options when using the garage. Steps and elevators provide access to the upper levels of the garage, but TSMO officials explained that the elevators will not be available for use until work is completed to provide communication access.

Construction is already in progress on a new ring road that will connect to the parking garage. “Until that road is complete,” Gerber said, “traffic will be routed along Theis Way through the Wiesbaden Fitness Center parking lot.”

Gerber added that when the parking garage opens, the overflow parking lot, located between Buildings 1002 and 1033 will be converted to a tactical vehicle parking area.
