Frequently Asked Questions
about Refuse Services and Grounds Maintenance in Family Housing

Who is responsible for grass cutting and leaf pick-up for family housing?

If you live in Hainerberg, Crestview or Aukamm Housing areas, the DPW has hired a contractor to provide this service. If you live in Mainz-Kastel or the airfield housing, DPW in-house work crews perform this service. Exception: Duplex and single-unit owners are solely responsible for their own grounds maintenance. Vacant units are maintained by contract.

How often is the grassmowed?

The contractor is required to maintain lawns to a height not more than 12cm. However, this may be impacted by rain and weather delays. If grounds are too wet the contractor will not destroy lawns or grounds by mowing. If you are experiencing problems with the frequency or adequacy of grass maintenance, please call civ (0611) 705‑5344/ 1560.

What if I want (or must) cut my own grass, rake my own leaves or do my own grounds maintenance?

Lawn mowers, weed eaters, grass seed and rakes are available at the Self Help Store located at Mississippi Strasse 3 in Hainerberg Housing Area. Self Help is open from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Saturday. Phone: civ (0611) 705‑5583.

What is bulk trash?

Items that are too large to place into your individual refuse container are considered bulk trash. This includes sofas, tables, rugs, appliances, chairs, toys and cabinets.

What must I do to have bulk trash picked up?

Bulk trash is picked up every Monday. Place items neatly next to trash containers prior to 6 a.m. on the day of pick up or after 6 p.m. the night before.

What do I do about old car batteries, tires, hazardous waste, etc.?

Dispose of hazardous waste such as old paint, pesticides, varnishes, old tires and batteries at the Self Help Store located at Mississippi Strasse 3 in Hainerberg Housing.
